My Perception of Beauty free essay sample
I recollect clearly my first genuine electrical discharge. Im six years of age and persuaded that expressive dance is excessively specialized. I lean toward chocolate. Out of nowhere, the brilliant evening light fills the mirror just along these lines, and for one second, I see a ballet dancer. Wonder hurries through me, and a ballet dancer turns into the most delightful thing on the planet. I sharpen my ballet performer, in dream and practice, until she is faultless, with her nectar eyes, pink sugar legs, sucrose grin, and French vanilla skinââ¬impossibly impeccable all around. Throughout the years, expressive dance lost its gloss. It turned out to be unreasonably specialized for a 14-year-old. At the point when I left my time-concentrated move institute in secondary school to seek after new interests, I hurried to the sparkle and risk of the cheerleading group. Tara was the best on the crew, a future chief. Her eyes seethed and sizzled the way ballerinasââ¬â¢ never did. Her lips shone, delicious like Eves. We will compose a custom paper test on My Perception of Beauty or on the other hand any comparative theme explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page At the point when she was overexcited she stammered and lost her words; her half-discourse was silver-unbelievable as any dreams. Her tearless letter to her adoration composed during cheer camp on the rear of a Twinkies box, an admission, a request, and a lesson across the board, is one of the most excellent things Ive ever heard. I was enraptured not by her qualities, however by her imperfections, her mankind, the savagery with which she bore her scars. The aroma she gave me smells like cascades. I painted my wounds dull to coordinate hers; I wished my prefrontal cortex away with the goal that I could live as wildly as she did. She broke her arm. No second thoughts, no expressions of remorse. She simply fell the incorrect way, they said. (Fell the incorrect way?! It could have been her head!) I was her beneficiary clear; I needed to fly her tricks precisely. I did, inner voice shouting, and we completed the season well. She endorsed of my accomplishments, both gladdening and alarming me. It wasnââ¬â¢t until half a month into the following season, when new ability implied new tricks, that I completely acknowledged the amount I was jeopardizing moving, my first love (all the more critically, an affection that never attempted to kill me.) Though the group would do fine without me, I couldnââ¬â¢t surrender them since I dreaded for my security. No, I required an authentic getaway, so I took a crack at the most genuine thing I could be admitted to: an expert level artful dance program. Why the popular Nutmeg Conservatory let a half-jazz artist through their entryways Iââ¬â¢ll never know. Yet, I was there, and I was prepared, albeit two days and two wounded toes later I was distinctly off-pointe. I proceeded, however, in level shoes, getting looks at the genuine ballet performers in the mirrors. They were unsurprising, however unconventional, each caught in their propensities, their little sins. Katy-Sue was thoughtlessly infatuated with a kid sheââ¬â¢d left in Russia. Jacquelineââ¬â¢s scholastic quality was math: chicken had 231 calories, with sauce 312, cheddar 344. She picked just lettuce, with 8. Melina was gradually going crazy. I accused the way that the musician just played melodies from The Sound of Music; Julie Andrews was in my bad dreams as well. Bridget was farther gone. She had far off, stony eyes and she moved absolutely, consummately, consistently with a dull glare. We as a whole endured because of Eleanor, ballet dancer professional in her day, and conceivably the maddest of every one of us. The entirety of the artists were captivating, yet I clung tight to The Sound of Music. It was natural, ever-present, my Virgil. Of late Iââ¬â¢ve quit skipping between boundaries. The center way is similarly lively and better for my wellbeing. I keep on learning, however, from those tornado years. In spite of the fact that I presently can't seem to characterize magnificence, my stylish tastes have widened from exclusively desserts to sours, sharp flavoring, and salts, richening my human experience. En route, Iââ¬â¢ve discovered extraordinary comfort in each new dream. I live now abundantly and cleverly, faculties open to the limitless structures lifeââ¬â¢s magnificence takes.

King Claudius is one of the most interesting characters Essay Example for Free
Ruler Claudius is one of the most fascinating characters Essay Ruler Claudius is one of the most fascinating characters with regards to William Shakespeares play, Hamlet. He is a man who is constantly distracted with keeping up his own capacity, as opposed to securing his nation, Denmark, from threat. Act IV is one of the most critical acts in Hamlet as it gives us how Claudius truly thinks. In this demonstration, we experience Claudiuss pernicious taste and his fixation on power. Claudius is consequently one of the more huge characters in this demonstration, as this is the place we perceive how his psyche functions and how he goes to limits to recapture his power over his kin and the occasions that have as of late happened. One of the manners in which that Claudius keeps up his capacity is by utilizing others to further his own potential benefit, to be specific Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two unclear subjects who comply with the Claudiuss each order. Claudius additionally utilizes them as his very own government operatives, which is another genuine case of how he utilizes them to further his own potential benefit. Hamlet reflects upon this in perhaps the best statement in the play that appropriately portray Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: Besides, to be requested a wipe! that absorbs the lords face, his rewards, his specialists: when he needs what you have gathered, it is nevertheless pressing you, and, wipe, you will be dry once more. 1 In this statement, Hamlet depicts Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as wipes. This is a significant decent correlation since wipes absorb water and afterward are re-utilized once they are pressed, while Rosencrantz and Guildenstern get together fundamental data for the ruler and afterward are re-utilized once their data is imparted to the lord. Another case of how Claudius endeavors to recover power over the undertakings happening in Denmark is when Polonius is killed by Hamlet. At the point when Claudius catches wind of the homicide, he starts to think politically in the way that the homicide may demolish his majesty. He understands that to fathom this issue without compromising his position would require a lot of work and ability: We should, with all our highness and expertise,/Both face and reason. 2 Claudius, understanding that Hamlets unique goal was really to kill him3, chooses to send Hamlet quickly to England with the expectation that the English lord would kill him under Claudiuss demand. This can be considered as a genuine case of how Claudius is fixated on keeping up his political force. Since Claudius is currently mindful of Hamlets vindictive state, sending Hamlet to England might be considered as a decent method to get Hamlet far from Claudius. Another valid justification to why Claudius sends Hamlet to be killed in England and not in Denmark is a direct result of dread of losing his political force. In the event that Claudius chooses to execute Hamlet, both Gertrude and the individuals of Denmark will abhor him as the two of them love Hamlet without question, and in this way, his authority will be in question. However should not we put the solid law on him: Hes cherished of the occupied huge number, Who like not in their judgment, yet their eyes; And where tis along these lines, the wrongdoers scourge is weighd But never the offense. To manage all smooth and even, This abrupt sending him away should appear to be Deliberate interruption 4 Another case of how Claudius recovers his power over the occasions happening in this demonstration is when Laertes returns requesting to realize who had slaughtered his dad. Claudius doesn't disclose to Laertes the guilty party before Gertrude, expecting that she would betray him. Rather, he chooses to tell Laertes despite her good faith. It is right now that Claudius and Laertes are educated that privateers have returned Hamlet to Denmark, this allows Claudius to hit an arrangement with Laertes: If Claudius lets Laertes slaughter Hamlet, at that point Laertes will be under Claudiuss order. This is a greater bit of leeway for Claudius as it disposes of Hamlet without influencing his authority, and it holds Laertes under his order. My ruler, I will be administered: The somewhat, on the off chance that you could devise it with the goal that I may be the organ. 5 Claudius concocts a secure arrangement to kill Hamlet. He recommends that a fencing match be held among Laertes and Hamlet, except for a honed blade given to Laertes instead of a dull sword. He additionally adds that if Hamlet somehow managed to win, Claudius would give him a harmed drink as congrats to his triumph. What's more, he calls for drink, Ill have set him up A vessel for the nonce; wherepon however tasting, If he by chance getaway your venomd stuck, Our motivation may hold here. 6. This specific scene is very critical as it shows the peruser how genuinely pernicious Claudius is and how far he would go to keep up his capacity. Claudius is one of the most significant characters in Hamlet. He is a character of genuine force and disdain, who might go to any outrageous just to keep up his capacity and his authority. His fixation on total force is extraordinarily depicted in Act IV of Hamlet, making it one of the most significant and striking acts in the play. 1 William Shakespeare, Hamlet (Toronto: Harcourt Brace Company Canada Ltd, 1988), IV.ii. 13, 16-16, 20-22. 2 William Shakespeare, Hamlet (Toronto: Harcourt Brace Company Canada Ltd, 1988), IV. Random Admission Thoughts, April 2012 Edition - UGA Undergraduate Admissions
Random Admission Thoughts, April 2012 Edition - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Random Admission Thoughts, April 2012 Edition We have finished up the freshman decisions (except for the wait list decisions that we will not know about for a while), summer transfer decisions are almost completely done, and fall transfers are in mid-stream. As such, here are a few pieces of information, wisdom, and random ideas. Transfer applicants, please make sure that all transcripts from all colleges attended are in. Even if it was a summer course, a dual enrollment course in HS, or whatever, we need official transcripts from all colleges. Do not have a fax sent to us, as we will just shred it. Why waste your time and ours. Again, no faxes. Everyone, please make sure to not wait until the last minute to take care of things. If you are late for a class, it will go on without you. If you are late for a plane, it will take off without you. Please dont let a college move on without you just because you did not take care of things on time. Transfer students, please make sure to look at the grades on your college transcripts and know that we look at all grades in transferable courses, even if you repeat a bad grade. I just looked at a transcript where the college listed the GPA as a 3.00, but we have it as a 2.15, because of numerous F grades in the first term that the other college waived when the course was repeated with better grades. It is not like the Men in Black where you can just hit a button and we forget about some grades. Admitted freshman, deposits are due on May 1. Do not wait until the last minute of April 30th to make a decision if possible. In addition, do not double deposit (unless you are on a wait list and then get admitted off of it, in which case you should contact the school you no longer will be attending). Double depositing is bad! Admitted freshman (and transfers), keep your grades up! We will be looking at your final grades, and we have revoked admissions at times. I hate those calls, so please do not make me call you about a big drop in your grades. Wait listed students, please know that if we could make wait list decisions sooner, we would, but we have to wait and see what the freshman class is looking like numbers wise. The wait in wait list is there for a reason, even if it is painful. Sorry! Rising seniors in HS, start make plans for visiting campuses, determining who might write your recommendations, get a copy of your HS transcript after junior year is complete, etc. As well, rising seniors, review how the colleges you are interested in look at the SAT and ACT scores. For instance, if you send UGA three SAT scores, we will only use the highest subscores, so you do not have to worry about score choice. In other words, if you are interested in UGA, send in your test scores early! This will let us communicate with you earlier, will make sure you do not forget to send the scores, etc. You would not believe the number of people who are just now calling us because they forgot to send in their SAT/ACT scores, even with us reminding them 3+ times. Find time to read a book outside of your normal school work. If you have time to tweet, get on Facebook, or play Call of Duty, you have time to read. Just do it! Freshman and sophomore HS students, your grades in your first two years do count. We will be looking at them. So do not slack off and think we will just ignore these grades. Transfer applicants, please be patient. We have roughly 2,500 fall transfer applicants, and it takes time to review them. I would guess that about 800 decisions already made, but it takes a while. Again, patience. On April 7, To Kill a Mockingbird will air on the USA channel, 8 PM EST. If you get a chance, watch it! It is wonderful! Parents, do not listen to rumors. If someone says I heard that UGA , run away with your hands over your ears. Really, do that! Admitted Freshman, choose a college that fits what you are looking for in a college, not what your friend/neighbor/boyfriend/girlfriend think is the right one for you. Do a Random Act of Kindness today. Trust me, it will make at least two people smile. Go Dawgs!

Synthesis of Dibenzalacetone by the Aldol Condensation Essay
Experiment 11: Synthesis of Dibenzalacetone by the Aldol condensation Introduction: The Aldol condensation reaction, under basic conditions, involves the nucleophilic addition of an enolate ion to another carbonyl group. The resulting product, a beta-hydroxy ketone or aldehyde, is called an aldol because it contains both and aldehyde group and the hydroxy group of alcohol. Condensations, including aldol condensation, combine two or more molecules, typically with a loss of a smaller molecule (including water or alcohol). In the presence of a base, the aldol condensation occurs by a nucleophilic addition of the enolate ion (a strong nucleophile) to a carbonyl group. The final step, protonation, gives the desired aldol. Huckleberry Finn Too Offensive For School - 880 Words
Huckleberry Finn too Offensive for School? A widely debated topic concerning, Mark Twainââ¬â¢s classic Huckleberry Finn centers on its content which may or may not be too offensive to be allowed on public school reading lists. How to Make Spanish Rice Free Essays
How to Make Spanish Rice Making Spanish rice is a fairly fast and easy process. It involves browning the rice, adding the ingredients, and cooking the rice. Before you begin you will need the following ingredients: cooking oil (vegetable or canola), long grain rice (I prefer Mahatma Jasmine), a tomato, an onion, water, and tomato bullion. We will write a custom essay sample on How to Make Spanish Rice or any similar topic only for you Order Now The following seasonings are optional: Sazon Goya con azafran, Sazon Goya con culantro/achiote. found on Mexican food aisle at most grocery stores)You will also need a two quart sauce pan with a lid (a larger pan may be used, but the rice will cook faster, therefore the cooking time will vary), a large spoon, and a gas or electric stove top. You need to take caution not to brown the rice too fast. If you cook the Spanish rice according to the following process, the rice will be soft and moist, with no standing liquid in the pan. First you will need to brown the rice. In order to do this, you will need to add a half cup of cooking oil to a two quart sauce pan (a larger pan will work, but the rice will have more room to cook, therefore it will cook faster and take less time). Next, pre-heat the oil on medium heat for about two minutes. Then add two cups of long grain rice to the pre-heated oil. (I prefer Mahatma Jasmine long grain rice because it cooks fluffier and it looks better) Continue to cook the rice on medium heat, stirring often with a large spoon. While the rice is browning, chop a small tomato and half of a medium onion. When the rice starts to brown, you will need to stir the rice more frequently. The rice will burn if you fail to stir it often or have the heat too high. The rice will be a golden brown color when it is ready for the next process. Browning the rice usually takes about fifteen minutes. The second process is adding the ingredients. First, stir in the chopped onions and tomatoes. Then add five and a half cups of water and stir. Let the water heat, but not to boiling. When the water appears hot, add five teaspoons of Knorr tomato bullion. Then add two packets of each: Sazon Goya con azafran (orange/yellow box), Sazon Goya con culantro/achiote (two tone orange box). (This can be found on the Mexican aisle at most grocery stores. The Sazon Goya is optional. I use it because it gives the rice a little more color and I think a better flavor). Stir the mixture until the seasonings are well dissolved. Place the lid on the rice. You should then reduce the heat at this point to medium/low. The final step in cooking the Spanish rice doesnââ¬â¢t take long. I think it is the fastest process of the three. I usually let the rice cook for about thirteen-eighteen minutes. I do not stir the rice at all during this final step. I open the lid every few minutes to make sure the rice is not cooking too fast. You should see liquid for at least the first eight minutes or so. When you do not stir the rice, it appears fluffier and not so mushy looking. The Spanish rice will be ready when you no longer see standing liquid in the pan. You can carefully insert the large spoon down to the bottom of the pan of Spanish rice (without stirring) to make sure the rice is not cooking too fast and to see if the rice is ready. The rice will be soft when it is ready. Keep the lid on the pan until you are ready to serve it. If you have followed the previous steps of this process correctly, your Spanish rice will be fluffy and soft. If you browned the rice too fast, it will be hard and will not fully cook as it should. The rice will also have a burnt taste. In the event this happens, reduce the heat while you are browning the rice or stir more frequently the next time you make Spanish rice. If the Spanish rice is too dry or hard, it may be possible you had your heat to high after adding the ingredients. The next time you should cook it on a lower heat, or add a little more water. You may take into consideration that some stoves may vary. This process was done with an electric stove. You can make little tweaks in this process if you find it necessary. You can reduce the heat if the rice appears to cook to fast. The rice seldom ever cooks too slowly. If it cooks too slowly, it will usually just take a little longer to cook. In chapter fifteen we see how the joke has affected him deeply; He was conscious of its presence even when his back was turned Her unrevealed eyes had watched every curve as she formed it; her brain had seen him in imagination the while. Why should she had imagined him? It affects Boldwood so much that he dreams about the unknown woman who wrote the card; Whenever Boldwood dozed she took form, and comparatively ceased to be a vision: when he awoke there was the letter justifying the dream. Before Boldwood falls in love with Bathsheba, he is known throughout the town as a secluded bachelor leading a quiet life, he had no interest in women whatsoever. But deep down she does not want to marry him, she just does not have the heart to say so. As a result of this, she says she will think about his offer; I may speak to you again on the subject. , Yes. By doing this Bathsheba only leads him on further and intensifies his love for her, making the situation so much worse. We see how strong his fixation and love is for Bathsheba when he meets her on the road in a state of pain and fury after receiving her letter of rejection. He is in such pain he blames her for making him fall so in love; But, I say, t here was a time when I thought nothing of you, cared nothing of you, and yet you drew me on I took for earnest what you insist was jest and now this that I pray to be jest you say is awful. He is livid with Troy and Bathshebas feelings for him. Boldwood feels that Troy has stolen Bathsheba from him; Why did Troy not leave my treasure alone? Boldwood also makes a reference to the Scarlet fever which he suggests is what has bewitched Bathsheba; Dazzled by Brass and Scarlet! This could be Hardys reminded that this was one of the common occurrences that happened amid women of that time. These enraged and jealous comments are a couple of the many dynamics that show us how possessive and obsessive Boldwoods character really is. Other examples of this are his rekindled hope for Bathshebas heart at the thought of Troys death; Thereupon a strange fire lighted up Boldwood eye, and his face flushed with the suppressed excitement of an unutterable thought. , his persistency at the Christmas party; Be gracious and give up a little to me, when I would give up my life for you! , his drastic action at Troys return; He had turned quickly, taken one of the guns, cocked it and at once discharged it at Troy. In chapter fifty-five, we see how deep Boldwoods obsession really is when Gabriel and Bathsheba find jewellery dated and marked for the day of Bathshebas and Boldwoods supposed wedding; above all there was a case of jewellery They were all carefully packed in paper, and each package was labelled Bathsheba Boldwood, a date being subjoined six years in advance. These are all reasons for Boldwoods refusal. Bathsheba refuses Gabriel Oak because he offers her the same kind of life style that Boldwood does; At home by the fire, whenever you look up there I shall be and whenever I look up, there will be you. Gabriel offers her everything he feels would make a farmers wife happy; You shall have a piano in a year or two farmers wives are getting to have pianos now And have one of those little ten pound gigs for market and nice flowers, and birds cocks and hens I mean And a frame for cucumber like a gentleman and lady. Once again this is a classic example of the tamed and adventurous life that Bathsheba does not want to lead. Bathsheba leads Gabriel on right from the beginning of the story by running after him when he has left her house, because he aunt told Gabriel that Bathsheba has and has had many sweethearts. Gabriels original intention of visiting the house is to ask for Bathshebas hand in marriage, so he is thoroughly over excited to see her running after him; It was Bathsheba Everdene, Gabriels colour deepened. When she confesses that she has only come forth to flatten the rumour about her many sweethearts, his hopes are once again dashed; To run after anyone like this, and then say you dont want him! Gabriel never stops loving Bathsheba, but his love differs from Boldwoods because it is not pushy and desperate, but patient and accepting. Gabriel is the only one with which Bathsheba has a meaningful and growing relationship. He is always completely honest with her even when she does not want him to be, an example of this is in chapter twenty; Well what is your opinion of my conduct? That it is unworthy of any thoughtful, and meek, and comely woman. He risks his life to save her farm by recovering her ricks in the midst of a great storm; Then Oak went back again, ascended tothe top, stepped off the ladder for greater expedition, and carried on thatching. When her flock are close to death, Gabriel is theonly one who can save them but Bathsheba has fired him in a haughty row. In this instance, he teaches her humility by forcing her to swallow her pride for the sake of her sheep; He says beggars cant be choosers her word in reply being Dont abandon me, Gabriel! These acts show that Gabriels love has always been pure, consistent and always growing, maybe this is why Hardy used the name Oak (Oak tree) as an appropriate fit for his guardian Angel (Gabriel) character. After Bathshebas tragic ordeal being witness to Troys death, she decides to marry Gabriel. She decides to do this because Gabriel suggests to her that he is going to leave, I shall not be your mistress much longer shall I, Gabriel? Well no. She realises that Gabriel is her best friend and after the tribulation she has been through, she finds out that he is the one she really wants along with the life he has to offer her. In conclusion, I believe that one can account for Bathshebas choice of husband in Troy because his superficial appearance of gallantry complimented her vain and naive nature at that point in her life. However, as the book lengthens we watch Bathsheba grow into the mature and graceful woman who is ready for a steady relationship. I feel that Bathsheba and Gabriel should have a happy life together, appreciating love and each other. Bathsheba has changed a lot since his first proposal of marriage because the many effects love can have on the heart have tamed her wild shrew-life spirit. She has grown to know that lust, appearance and excitement are not everything. She has developed into a wise woman who knows the hardships of life and no longer wants the fantasy life she once expected from a man.

Confucianism and Taoism Two contrasting views of life essay
Confucianism and Taoism Two contrasting views of life essay Confucianism and Taoism: Two contrasting views of life? essay Confucianism and Taoism: Two contrasting views of life? essayAny cultural factor should be considered as part of the system that gave rise to it. A single factor which is torn from a socio-historical context can be easily understood wrongly. It is impossible to speak on Taoism out of socio-cultural context in which it is originated. This context is Confucianism, without which, perhaps, there would not be Taoism. These two religions have common roots, but they are still two contrasting vies of life.Taoism emerged in 5-4 centuries BC and it seemed to be an ââ¬Å"opponentâ⬠of the dominant ethical system of Confucianism (Yu, 2008). The postulates of these studies often seem to be diametrically opposed (in this case, the philosophical Taoism is discussed as social and philosophical teachings, not as the methods of psycho-physical training and alchemical practice). The main difference between the Confucian and Taoist cultures is the attitudes toward human nature, from which ââ¬Å"di stribution of rolesâ⬠, established between them in the traditional Chinese culture, implies. Both scholars have suggested the need for change in order to get closer to the ââ¬Å"true essence of a manâ⬠but the question is what was invested in this concept and methods of updating the true nature?Confucians believed that the true essence of man is humanity (jen), the good, true human beginning. Self-education, the development of a ââ¬Å"humaneâ⬠beginning (the carrier of high moral and psychological qualities) and the suppression of a ââ¬Å"wildâ⬠, ââ¬Å"evilâ⬠were understood under the self-improvement. At the time of Taoism appearance Confucianism was the official doctrine, the foundation of the state structure. ââ¬Å"The central figureâ⬠, the ideal of Confucianism chun-tzu is a ââ¬Å"noble manâ⬠, the support of the Confucian mind. Its virtues: self-control, justice, piety, and social responsibility. Its goal is public service; personality i n Confucian ethics is subjected to the society (Chen, 2010).Confucian culture is elite; the basic medium of its distribution is the noble people (mostly government officials whose main activity consists in the administration of the state). Hence the desire to order governing and ritualizing all possible spheres of life is. Similar to the psychological sphere, the changes achieved by limiting the adverse factors, mainly through the acquisition of behavior norms, the control (first external and then internal). A permanent control over own mental sphere and the preservation of permanent self-control were considered as virtue of the ââ¬Å"noble manâ⬠. The most important method on self-improvement is also related with self-observation, designed to identify ââ¬Å"wrongâ⬠that should be eliminated. On the other hand, Taoists, condemning the ââ¬Å"barbarismâ⬠, wildness, susceptibility to passion, understood a true human nature initially under inherent to every phenomenon co smic principle, which embodies the same laws of nature for all the universal. The highest goal of Taoism is the identification and ultimate actualization of the ââ¬Å"true beginningâ⬠in a man and the complete submission to it, ââ¬Å"mergingâ⬠with a single flow of the universe movement. There is originally no question about morality and the public wellbeing. Taoism focuses on individual improvement. The moral growth comes naturally as the union of the adept with Tao, but it is not imposed from outside. Hence, the behavior of the Taoist is less constrained by the conventional rules. Their place is taken by the natural rules that come with a deep transformation of the individual and, therefore, they are not perceived as a constraint. Thus, Taoism is more humanistic comparing to Confucianism, which is initially focused on the education of the decent member of society and the maintenance of public order.Assessing the vulnerability to passions as negative as the Confucians di d, Taoists were opposed to the forcible suppression of unwanted aspects of human nature. Instead of fighting with him, the cultivation of a state of rest, detachment including alienation from manââ¬â¢s own passions was practiced in the Taoist tradition. ââ¬Å"Selfâ⬠takes the position of an observer providing a stream of consciousness opportunity to flow itself:ââ¬Å"Having reached the limit of emptiness, observing peace and tranquility, looking at the mutual origination of things, Ill contemplate only its permanent returnâ⬠(Tao Te Ching) (Kirkland, 1998).Different ways of perceiving themselves and world Taoists and Confucians have different ââ¬Å"viewsâ⬠on life perception. Confucian thinking is necessarily binary, dichotomic, based on learning the phenomena in terms of their opposition, on the opposition of pairs such as ââ¬Å"natural ââ¬â culturalâ⬠, ââ¬Å"tranquility ââ¬â movementâ⬠, ââ¬Å"good ââ¬â evilâ⬠, ââ¬Å"subject â⠬â objectâ⬠, etc. In human nature Confucians clearly separated and opposed the ââ¬Å"naturalâ⬠(passions) and ââ¬Å"culturalâ⬠, designed to restrain these passions. Such an approach, which opens the way to the analytical knowledge of the world, allows ordering a picture of the world, at the same time ââ¬Å"splitsâ⬠the world in the oppositions, depriving it of its integrity. In this case everything what does not fit into this artificial model of the world is distorted or ignored. Confucian upbringing also contributed to the internal confrontation, leading to intrapersonal conflicts. For the Taoist lifeââ¬â¢s view, the social rules and norms are perceived as: 1) violence against the person, 2) convention, artificial formation, thus, preventing the appearance of the true nature of man, and 3) a factor that increases the separation of a man from the world (Dickerson, 2006).Taoist view of life is holistic, so-called ââ¬Å"contradictionsâ⬠are combined, p resented as inseparable interacting poles of the whole, and this interaction is the source of movement and development. Unity with Tao blurs the line between object and subject, ââ¬Å"selfâ⬠and ââ¬Å"non-selfâ⬠, the man and the world.Confucius sees the main task of the philosophy in the preservation and transmission of the ancient culture to the descendants. The person as a member of society is in the center of his teaching. The main human quality, according to Confucius, is the humanity, or ââ¬Å"love to peopleâ⬠(jen). Humanity is also a universal law, the meaning of which Confucius formulated in the form of ââ¬Å"golden ruleâ⬠of morality, ââ¬Å"Do not wish anyone anything what you donââ¬â¢t want for yourselfâ⬠(Nuyen, 2001).Confucius devoted much attention to issues of state governance. In his view, the relationship between citizens and subordinates should be regulated by analogy to the relationship in the family. Everyone must adhere to his res ponsibilities and do not deviate from them. In this case, he becomes a ââ¬Å"noble manâ⬠and is guided by justice, rather than petty personal gain, as the ââ¬Å"low menâ⬠do. In contrast to Confucianism, focusing on the social aspects of reality, Taoism addressed exclusively to the inner world of a man. Only in himself, in the depths of his mind and soul, a person can open Tao the mystical essence of the life, its underlying cause, meaning and ultimate goal. The main principle of Taoism is ââ¬Å"Everything comes from Tao; Tao is in and returns to Taoâ⬠. Being on the path of self-contemplation and opening Tao, a person can attain physical immortality by going to a higher level of existence. While Taoism and Confucianism have some similarities, they still have contrasting views of life. Taoism, with its concept of non-action, traditionally in opposition to Confucianism, preached the service to the emperor and public. This opposition was so deep that it was even refle cted in the work of Jesuit missionaries: for instance, Matteo Ricci was in a close contact with the Confucian elite and rejected Taoism as a pagan practice while his opponent Michele Ruggieri argued the similarities between the concepts of Tao and the Logos. However, the explicit opposition of these traditions existed mostly on the surface. In reality, in full accordance with the Taoist life view, both doctrines are inseparable poles of a single socio-cultural phenomenon. Their interaction leads to interpenetration enriching equally both traditions.

Pronouncing the S
Pronouncing the S Most of the time, the s of Spanish sounds the same as the s sound in English words such as see and bus, although perhaps a bit shorter. However, the sound of the Spanish s is also affected by the sound of the letter that follows it. When an s is followed by a voiced consonant - in other words, a b, d, voiced g, m, n, l, r or v - it is pronounced like a soft z sound. Note that the z-like sound occurs in Spanish only before those consonants. It does not occur at the end of words (such as in plurals) or when followed by a vowel. The s sound changes slightly merely because it is blending into the sound that follows. In some areas, native speakers frequently omit the s sound when it comes at the end of a syllable, so that à ¿Cà ³mo est usted? ends up sounding something like à ¿Cà ³mo et uted? You should be aware of this if youre traveling in such areas but shouldnt imitate it elsewhere. The question à ¿Cà ³mo est usted? (How are you?) is used in our audio lesson on pronouncing the Spanish . Words used to demonstrate the z-like sound of s are mismo (same) and desde (from).

Asian Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Asian Management - Essay Example In this context, the management has to be reformed in order to meet the requirements set by the constantly changing environment. Currently, management presents two forms covering the needs of privatised sector and SOEs. Under these terms, SOEs are subjects either to the line system (depended on the central industrial ministry) or the block system (representing the local government institutions). As of the main industrial areas in which SEOs operate, the following ones can be used as an indicative sample: oil, telecommunications, aviation, power and steel. The role of the management team to the performance of the above organizations has been considered as significant, however the presence of particular elements (like the close dependency from the central government or the use of a highly bureaucratic system when applying the managerial plans in practice) often create a net of negative influences to the managementââ¬â¢s daily operations. In the modern industrial and economic environment, governments not only ââ¬Ëshape their countrys economy but also their culture and penetrate deeply into the dynamics of organizationsââ¬â¢. Moreover (Tjosvold, 2002, 741) organizations must be understood ââ¬Ëwithin their larger context, in particular in terms of their dependence on governmentââ¬â¢. In this context, facilitative governments are ââ¬Ësupportive of independent organizations, operate through predictable laws and regulations, and are strong, whereas nonfacilitative governments are hostile, erratic, and weak; organization and management in the embrace of government shows that nonfacilitative governments require managers to accommodate to complex dependenciesââ¬â¢. Particularly regarding China, managers in private companies, ââ¬Ëunsure how to cope with many vague and contradictory laws, indicated that they were dependent upon the good graces of government officials more than established state-owned enter prises (SOEs)ââ¬â¢. On the other hand it has been proved (Zhu, 1994, 1, 12)

My First Conk from Malcolm X Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
My First Conk from Malcolm X - Essay Example Blacks thus degrade their natural bodies without realizing that such degradations are embarrassing as Malcolm says that it seems foolish to see women having green and pink wigs to look like whites. Moreover, none of the blacks are ever thinking of gaining similar education or intelligence as that of the whites (Malcolm, 131). Conked hair and wigs illustrates that blacks have been brainwashed because even in the modern world, most blacks still feel inferior to the whites. Blacks are always ready to endure the pain of conk hair even after knowing that it does not make a black person more adorable. This is based on the argument by Malcolm that no woman will admire a man based on his hair appearance no matter how well the conk is; it does not add any value to the man (Malcolm, 136). In conclusion, before Malcolm realized that conk hair was a degradation of his natural body, he was willing to endure the pain to look like the whites but after he discovered that blacks had been brainwashed to think they are inferior to the whites, he has never had a conk (Malcolm, 141). All black individuals need to do as Malcolm did and instead of trying to be like the whites, they should instead study hard to better than the

Role Of Financial Markets In A Modern Economy
Role Of Financial Markets In A Modern Economy This essay examines the assumption, that a large financial sector consistently benefits the real economy. It has been acknowledged that the financial sector, not to mention some of its components, may sometimes become too large. It can end up posing a threat to both economic and financial stability, so the essay develops our understanding of where the optimal threshold lies. The regulatory measures and addresses the problem best: namely, preventing the financial industry from becoming too large and taking excessive risks, leading to the emergence of bubbles, and to the production of complex and dense financial instruments. And we should avoid imposing restrictive measures that will prevent the financial sector from channelling resources towards productive opportunities. In doing so, we need to make sure that our measures target non-traditional financial markets as much as traditional banking, in order not to encourage regulatory arbitrage and a return to business as usual outside the auspices of regulators. Financial innovation can impose a threat to both economic and financial stability, so we have to enhance our understanding of where the best possible threshold lies in determining the size of the financial systems. There is an emerging consent that while financial markets are generally conducive to economic growth, in the run-up to the recent crisis they were operating on an extreme scale. This essay will converse around four main points: firstly that efficient financial markets enhance growth, however, if they grow too large, then they may lead to a misallocation of resources and cause costly crises. Secondly, facts will be presented showing that in the build-up to the crisis, the size of the financial sector outgrew its trend. Thirdly, identification of some of the main reasons why this occurred and argued how to avoid that such imbalance again. To this end, regulation and supervision can play an important role. Lastly, while ensuring that the financial sector does not grow beyond its optimal size, the new regulatory framework should not reach the point of financial domination. The knowledge from recent industrialised countries has relatively claim, that deeper financial markets improve economic efficiency, lead to a better allocation of productive capital, and increase long-term economic growth. However, the frequent financial shocks associated with dynamic financial industries, and in particular the recent economic crisis, also highlight the role large financial markets play in downside risk. This mutually shows that there is a trade-off between a highly vibrant financial sector and the overall stability of the financial system. (Ranciere, R., Tornell, A., and F. Westermann, 2008) The first part of this essay will argue the aspects of the financial sector which can give us key insights into this trade-off is its size. When reasonably large, financial markets promote economic efficiency by recognising productive opportunities and transforming savings into the investment vitally to finance those opportunities. However, when they become too large, relative to what is implied by economic fundamentals, problems like financial complexity, poorly understood financial innovation, flock behaviour, and endogenous risk-taking to name just a few suddenly outweigh the benefits. The recent financial and economic crisis is a stark example of that. The pre-crisis period was characterised by the growing size, complexity and connectiveness of financial markets, with ensuing unfavourable effects on the global economy. In order to address the problem, regulatory measures are being taken to impose limits on the tendency of the financial sector to create downside risk. But a fine balance needs to be reached: these measures must be effective but not penalizing; they need to address the core of the problem without excessively limiting the ability of financial markets to sustain economic growth. Before going on the second point, it is perhaps useful to explain why we still need a large and dynamic financial industry. In general, deep and efficient financial markets improve economic performance both by raising the level of growth and by allocating productive capital more efficiently, ultimately generating benefits for the society as a whole( Rajan, R., and L. Zingales, 1998) . The difference is particularly noticeable when it comes to the financing of innovative ideas, where the much larger US venture capital industry has been credited over the years with the emergence of whole new industries and such innovative corporate giants as Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Google. All this leads us to the second point of the essay, which is how the size of the financial sector outgrew its trend. Most economists think the relationship between finance and growth as one in which more is better. However, the recent crisis has revealed that a financial sector which goes beyond a certain threshold (or breaking point) can harm the economy and society as a whole. In particular, an oversized financial industry tends to intensify information asymmetries, moral hazard problems, and the hunt for yield, leading to excessive risk-taking and over-leveraging of the system. The events of 2007-2008 suggest that when financial sectors are too large, the allocation of resources may become inefficient. Numerous examples of misallocation were associated with the credit growth of the early 2000s as well, of which the expansion of the US sub-prime mortgage market is just the most obvious one. We can think of examples in Europe too for instance, growth in Spain relied for years on an ever-expanding real estate sector fuelled by increasing borrowing.( Popov, A., and P. Roosenboom, 2009) After discussing the negative penalties on financial stability and economic growth that a too large financial sector can generate, in this section I will analyse available evidence to show that the financial industry as a whole has grown to a sub-optimal size. It is important to note that this is not due to rising compensation in traditional financial sectors like credit and insurance, but due to the large increase in compensation in non-traditional financial activities like investment banks, hedge funds and the like (Figure 1) below. This is another reason why any changes to the regulatory environment aimed at preventing systemic crises in the future will have to deal not just with the traditional banking sector, but with the so-called shadow banking sector as well. Unfortunately, it is not clear whether the crisis has imposed discipline on the financial sector. In theory, one would have expected the crisis to have resulted in, for instance, a new bonus structure with smaller rewards for short-term behaviour, less proprietary trading and more trading on own resources, greater aversion to the accumulation of debt, etc. To find possible remedies to the excessive size of the financial sector, it is important to understand the factors that have allowed it to grow too big, which leads us to the third part of the essay. As mentioned before, one obvious reason is excessive profits. Not only did rapid financial innovation enable Wall Street to encourage risk-taking through record pay, but this process also diverted human resources away from more traditional productive occupations towards the shadow banking system. Of course, an equally important reason for the increase in the size of the financial sector is the global accumulation of savings over time. It has been argued that the pre-crisis boom in US real estate and securitisation markets reflected high foreign demand for safe US assets resulting from excess world savings in the context of persistent global imbalances.( Caballero, R., and A. Krishnamurthy, 2009) According to this interpretation, foreign asset demand not only pushed down the risk-free interest rate in the US but also compressed the risk premier on risky assets. The low cost of financing, in turn, fostered an increase in the level of leverage of the domestic financial sector which exacerbated systemic risk While the recent increase in the profits of the industry was certainly due to improved financial innovation and technology, it can also be attributed to the higher risks that the financial sector undertook.(Biais, B., Heider, F. and M. Hoerova, 2010)By limiting these risks, it will be possible to reduce the size of the financial sector as well. For instance, suppose that risks decrease because of limits to leverage. This may imply that profits will go down as well. As a consequence, the financial sector will attract fewer resources, private capital will flow to more profitable industries, and its size will decrease. A natural question is how the new regulatory framework will affect economic growth. This question will answer the final part of the essay. It is necessary to ensure financial stability and restrain excessive credit, at the same time this process should not go too far and impair economic growth. There is substantial macro level evidence that the depth of the credit markets measured alternately as liquid liabilities and commercial bank credit to the private sector is associated with higher economic growth. (King, R., and R. Levine, 1993.) Changes in the supply of credit, both in terms of volumes and credit standards, have been shown to have a significant effect on real economic activity through business lending; the evidence is stronger for the euro area than the US. Studies that have gone into the mechanisms of this effect have generally concluded that the positive effect of credit markets on growth comes from reallocation of investment from dying to booming sectors, from higher rat es of new business entry, and from higher growth of industries consisting mainly of small firms. As I mentioned above, the expansion of sub-prime lending clearly imposed a negative externality on the whole economy, and so in hindsight regulatory measures that would have prevented such credit expansion could in fact have been beneficial. To summarise, capital requirements, and leverage ratios serve well to illustrate the trade-off between stability and growth as mentioned at the beginning. The examples provided earlier show that the costs incurred when an oversized financial system unwinds are very large and outweigh any pre-crisis gains. Therefore, practical regulatory actions are to restore the balance between stability and growth is perfectly justified. Conclusion Financial markets are central players in a dynamic modern economy, channelling resources from savers to borrowers and allocating them to productive investment opportunities. At the same time, our experience in the past decade has highlighted the dangers of allowing financial sectors to become too large. In doing so, negative developments like the hunt for rents, the propensity to herd and create bubbles, the misalignment of incentives, and the production of complex innovative financial instruments may outweigh the benefits of finance. Given the obvious negative impact of an excessively large financial industry, we keep asking ourselves whether limits should be imposed on the size of the financial sector itself. It must be clear from the evidence that has been presented that the answer to this question is yes. However, it is also essential to make sure that we do not repress financial markets to the point of jeopardising their contribution to growth. Therefore, the measures outlined are aimed at making the industry safer rather than weaker, and should not be considered punitive. Their goal is to re-direct the financial sector so that it avoids embarking on unsustainable patterns. These actions are aimed at commercial banks as well as at non-traditional financial players to make sure that excessive risk-taking is not taking place outside the auspices of regulators. Ensuring that the financial sector is large enough to strengthen the economy while not being too large is a task that we take very seriously. There is a clear trade-off between economic growth and financial stability, and it is a difficult but critical task to strike a good balance, ensuring that we end up neither with too little growth nor with too little stability.

There were several such exchanges that traded in specific commodities in certain geographies. In the 1960s the futures market ran into trouble as high inflation resulted from a series of wars and droughts in the countr y which lead to considerable speculation and hoarding of agricultural commodities.Ever since the down of civilization commodity trading has become an integral part in the life of mankind. The very reason for this lies in the fact that commodities represent the fundamental utility of human being. Commodity markets are market where raw or primary products are exchange. These raw commodities are traded regulated commodity exchange they are bought and sold in standardize contract that may any movable property other them actionable claims, money and securities. This commodity market is becoming day by day the best for the increasing economy.Gold is valued in India as saving and investment vehicle and is the second preferred investment after bank deposit. India is worldââ¬â¢s largest consumer of gold jeweler and in investment. Gold is traded in the form of securities on stock exchange. In the cities gold is facing competition from the stock market and a wide range of consumer goods. Do mestic consumption is dictated by monsoon, harvest and marriage season. Indian jewellery off take is sensitive to price increases and even more so to the volatility. For years, portfolio managers have recommended a minimum of 10% to 20% of oneââ¬â¢s total net worth in gold as a hedge against inflation or as a safety net in the event that our paper money system collapses. Hence the study is about the commodities market in gold. Every commodity has its own price, and varies across markets even at the point of first sale, i. e. the wholesale market. There is of course another very active financial market, which has a price that is widely traded, i. e. the stock market. Here shares of companies are traded by investors at prices which are determined by multitude of perceptions. NEED FOR THE STUDY:- ? April to June 2012 CHAPTER-2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE TRADING OF GOLD IN COMMODITY MARKETS COMMODITY MARKETCommodity markets are markets where raw or primary product these raw commodities are traded on regulated commodities Exchange in which they are brought and sold in standardized contract it cover physical product markets but not ways that services including those of government, nor investment debt, can be seen as a commodity A commodity trading is sophisticated form of investing it is similar to stock trading but instead of buying and selling shares of companies, an investor buys an d sells commodities likes stocks, commodities are traded on exchange where buyers and sellers can work together to either get product they need or to make a profit from the fluctuation prices. There are few ways to trade commodities. Futures are contracting to buy or sell commodities at specific date. An option is the right to buy or sell a commodity at a specific price and date. COMMODITY TRADING: Trading futures is the purest way to invest in commodities. To trade commodities, an individual trading account can be opened either directly with a futures commission merchant or indirectly through as introducing broker.Another way to trade commodities is through a managed account, where you give someone written power of attorney to make and execute decisions about what and when to trade. He or she will have discretionary authority to buy or sell for your account or will contract you for approval to make trades, or you can hire a commodity trading advisor for a fee. And lastly, ever incr easingly popular methods of diversified investing in commodities include commodity pools (limited partnerships) or commodity related mutual funds. In all futures markets, trading decision are made in two ways ââ¬â Fundamental or Technical, although many traders use a combination of both.Fundamental analysis includes all factors that influence supply and demand. For the physical commodities markets, fundamental factors include weather and geopolitical events in producing countries ââ¬â outside forces that influence price action. For the financial futures markets, factors such as Federal Reserve actions and economic reports are among fundamental forces affecting prices. Technical analysis is based strictly on inside market forces. It involves tracking various price patterns that occurred in the markets in the past. Analysts focus on a variety of time frames, and trading decisions are based on past tendencies with the idea these price patterns tends to repeat themselves.Technic al analysis involves a wide range of techniques, and a variety of market indicators are studied including volume, open interest, and momentum. Each individual analyst has his favorite approach ââ¬â technical analysis is just as much art as it is science. REGULATOR OF COMMODITY MARKET THE DIFFERENT PRODUCT IN COMMODITY MARKET ARE USE 1. Precious metal 6. Plantations 2. Base metal 7. Spice 3. Pulses 8. Sugar 4. Cereals 9. potato 5. Energies Introduction Gold Gold is a unique asset based on few basic characteristics. First, it is primarily a monetary asset, and partly a commodity. As much as two thirds of goldââ¬â¢s total accumulated holdings relate to ââ¬Å"store of valueâ⬠considerations. Holdings in this category include the central bank reserves, private investments, and high-cartage jewelry bought primarily in developing countries as a vehicle for savings. Thus, gold is primarily a monetary asset. Less than one third of goldââ¬â¢s total accumulated holdings can be c onsidered a commodity, the jewelry bought in Western markets for adornment, and gold used in industry. The distinction between gold and commodities is important. Gold has maintained its value in after-inflation terms over the long run, while commodities have declined. Some analysts like to think of gold as a ââ¬Å"currency without a countryââ¬â¢.It is an internationally recognized asset that is not dependent upon any governmentââ¬â¢s promise to pay. This is an important feature when comparing gold to conventional diversifiers like T-bills or bonds, which unlike gold, do have counter-party risk History of gold in India Prior to 1962, India was the worldââ¬â¢s largest gold market and the main trading center was Bombay. In 1962, the government enacted the Gold Contract Act, which prohibited the citizens of India from holding pure gold bars and coins due to loss of reserves during the indo-china war. It was declared that the old holdings in pure gold bars to be compulsorily co nverted into jewelry. Pure gold bars and coins were to be dealt only by licensed dealers.A large unofficial market sprung up which dealt in cash only as a consequence of this legislation that adversely affected the official gold market. This also made way for smuggling and black marketing, which comprised of many jewelers and bullion traders. In 1990, India was on a verge of default of external liabilities as it had a major foreign exchange problem. It had to give up the concept of controlling and licensing as it led to nothing more than corruption and shortages. As a result, the India government pledged 40 tones from their gold reserves with the bank of England. India had to adopt the concept of liberalization. The government abolished the 1962 Gold control Act in 1992 and liberalized the import of gold in India for a duty payment of Rs. 250per 10 grams. The government made up for the foreign exchange problem by allowing free imports and earning the taxes. This step expanded the gol d market and it also waved off the unofficial trade i. e. smuggling and black marketing. This makes India the most price-sensitive market for gold in the world. Gold in Indian present scenario Gold is valued in India as a savings and investment vehicle and is the second preferred investment behind bank deposits. India is the worldââ¬â¢s largest consumer of gold in jewelry (much of which is purchased as investment). The hoarding tendency is well ingrained in Indian society, not least because inheritance laws in the middle of the twentieth century lent a great desirability to anonymity.Indian people are renowned for saving for the future and the financial savings ratio is strong, with a ratio of financial assets-to-GDP of 93%. Goldââ¬â¢s circulates within the system and roughly 30% of gold jewelry fabrication is from recycled pieces. India is typically also the largest purchaser of coins and bars for investment (>80tpa), although last year it had to concede first place to Japan in the wake of the heavy buying in the first quarter due to fears for the stability of the Japanese banking system. In 1998-2001 inclusive, annual Indian demand for gold in jewelry exceeded 600 tons; in 2002, however, due to rising and volatile prices and a poor monsoon season, this dropped back to 490 tons, and coin and bar demand dropped to 67 tons.Indian jewelry off take is sensitive to price increases and even more so to volatility, although this decline in tonnage since 1998 is also due in part to increasing competition from white and brown Goods and alternative investment vehicles, but is also a reflection of the increase in price. The Indian brideââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Streedhanâ⬠, the Wealth she takes with her when she marries and which remains hers, is still gold, however (thus giving gold an important role in the ââ¬Å"empowermentâ⬠of women in India). The distinction between gold and commodities is important. Gold has maintained its value in after-inflation terms ove r the long run, while commodities have declined. Some analysts like to think of gold as a ââ¬Å"currency without a countryââ¬â¢.It is an internationally recognized asset that is not dependent upon any governmentââ¬â¢s promise to pay. This is an important feature when comparing gold to conventional diversifiers like T-bills or bonds, which unlike gold, do have counter-party risk. Using this approach, gold can be used as portfolio diver sifier to improve investment performance. Effective Diversification During ââ¬Å"Stressâ⬠Periods: Traditional methods of portfolio diversification often fail when they are most needed-that is, during periods of financial ââ¬Å"stressâ⬠(instability). On these occasions, the correlations and volatilities of return for most asset classes(including traditional diversifiers such as bonds and alternative assets)increase, thus reducing the intended ââ¬Å"cushioningâ⬠effect of diversified portfolio. EXCHANGE-TRADED GOLD: GOLD-BACKED SECURITIES Gold is traded in the form of securities on stock exchange in Australia. France, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Sin gapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. By design, these forms of securitized gold investment, all regulated financial products, are generally referred to as Exchange Traded Commodities or Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and are expected to track the gold price almost perfectly. Unlike derivative products, the securities are 100% backed by physical gold held mainly in allocation form. These securities have had a major impact on the gold market, representing an annual average of 32% of identifiable investment and 6. 5% of total physical demand over the 5 years to 2008. Financial advisors and other investment professionals can provide further details about these products. FUTURES AND OPTIONS GOLD FUTURES Gold futures contracts are firm commitments to make or take delivery of a specified quantity and purity of gold on a prescribed date at an agreed price. The initial margin ââ¬â or cash deposit paid to the broker ââ¬â is only a fraction of the price of the gold underlying the contract. That means investors can achieve notional ownership of a value of gold considerably greater than their initial cash outlay. While this leverage can be the key to significant trading profits, it can also give rise to equally significant losses in the event of an adverse movement in the gold price. Futures prices are determined by the marketââ¬â¢s perception of what the carrying costs ââ¬â including the interest cost of borrowing gold plus insurance and storage charges -ought to be at any one time. The futures price is usually higher than the spot price for gold. Futures contracts are traded on regulated commodity exchanges. The largest are the New York Mercantile Exchange Comex Division (recently rebranded CME Globex, after a merger between Chicago Mercantile Exchange and NYMEX), the Chicago Board of Trade (part of CME) and the Tokyo Commodity Exchange. Gold futures are also traded in India a Dubai. The Commodity Futures Trading commission provides extensive reports on derivatives trading in the United States. Tradable commodity indices are based on fully collateralized baskets of long-only commodity futures, all of which include a small allocation to gold. GOLD OPTIONS These give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy (ââ¬Ëcall' option) or sell (ââ¬Ëput' option) a specified quantity of gold at a predetermined price by an agreed date. The cost of such an option depends on the current spot price of gold, the level of the pre-agreed price (the ââ¬Ëstrike price'), interest rates, the anticipated volatility of the gold price and the period remaining until the agreed date. The higher the strike price, the less expensive a call option and the more expensive a put option. Like futures contracts, buying gold options can give the holder substantial leverage. Where the strike price is not achieved, there is no point in exercising the option and the holder's loss is limited to the premium initia lly paid for the option. Like shares, both futures and options can be traded through brokers. Analysis Of The Lord Of The Flies - 889 Words
Randall English-4 15 April 2016 LOTF Literary Analysis Stranded on an island, a group of boys have the choice to be civil or savage. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, British schoolboys are marooned on an island. They voted Ralph to be the leader in an effort to remake the culture that they had left behind, accompanied by the intelligent Piggy as counselor. But Jack wants to be the leader too, and he individually lures all of the boys away from civility to the brutal survivalism of hunters. The conch symbolizes power, respect, and social order. Within the Lord of the Flies, Golding provides a brief look at the savagery that controls even the most civilized human beings. William Golding mirrors our modern day society byâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦All this I meant to say. Now I ve said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say. All that Ralph needs to do is point that all of the bo ys chose to follow a specific set of rules. When a country is struggling, people look toward leaders that symbolizes something good, just as the just as Ralph was chosen to be Chief because of his symbolic power. ââ¬Å"Ralph was vexed to find how little he thought like a grownup and sighed again. The island was getting worse and worseâ⬠(Golding 139). When Ralph observes that order is falling apart, he says the island is becoming worse and worse, rather than the boys. The simple fact that Ralph blames the island instead of the boys proves he is a good leader, and a good leader is civil. The conch symbolizes power, respect, and social order, just like Ralph. But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart (Golding 22). This quote shows how the conch and Ralph are connected in the boyââ¬â¢s heads, Ralph has the conch and he has authority so that sets him apart.
